for: donovan walsh @moody-money where:  la mordedura, best table they have to offer
Giada pulled out all the usual stops for her meeting with Donavon Walsh, a meeting that had been set long before both Giada and Donavon had been made aware of it. It was standard protocol, really, a little wining and dining, something her father or any seasoned professional would have done. Best table in the restaurant, hand picked menu, exclusive wine selection, the list when on and on. Just like the words from Giada's previous encounter with Donovan. They seemed to go on and on, still buzzing around in her mind as she took a her seat at La Mordedura. Something tells me you like a good challenge. And Donavon Walsh was about to find out exactly just how much she did.
For Giada wasn't simply looking to collect on an old deal made years ago between old men, or merely pawn her precious baby sister off and be done with it. No —  if she was going to foresee an archaic agreement go through then she was going to use it to her upmost advantage, to the Serpent's advantage, and to her sister’s. She wanted the Syndicate to pledge their support to them in this war —for she believed they were the key to all this— and ensure her sister's safety and happiness. Come hell or high water, Giada Rosalia D'Amiano was going to get what she wanted.
"Mr. Walsh," The councilwoman stood when he arrived, extending a hand to him like any business professional would do. "Thank you for joining me this evening. Please have a seat." She gestured towards the empty chair across from her, settling herself into her own, careful not to crease her custom Versace number. "I trust you already know why I asked you here this evening, however why don't we order some drinks first and make ourselves more comfortable."

Five Years Ago
"The genius bar has nothing on you," Francesca said, offering Donovan a smile as he set her old laptop down in front of her. The thing had been glitching, constantly flashing to a black screen, and she couldn’t figure out why. She was still surprised by her friendship with her sister’s ex. Their last encounter had been unforgettable—his escape from New York after needing money to leave town. Francesca had been twelve, her conscience still sharp, and she’d overheard her father’s evil plans. The gang life had been tough back then, and it was only worse now. It felt like fate had brought them back together, even more so that they’d become friends. She’d always liked Donovan. He had a good heart and had treated her sister well.
A hand grips her shoulder, and Francesca stiffens, though she forces a smile. Xavier Kentwood was her boyfriend. Their relationship had started so sweetly—flowers, extravagant dates, thoughtful gifts. He was a lawyer, polished and ambitious, ticking every box she thought she wanted. But then things began to shift. He was under pressure, trying to make partner at his law firm, and the stress showed. At first, it was just yelling. He’d apologize afterward, and there’d be peace—until it happened again. Then came the breaking and throwing of objects. Again, he’d apologize, promising it wouldn’t happen anymore. But recently, the violence had turned toward her. All it took was asking to adjust the time of their dinner reservation, and he exploded. Her ribs still ached from the consequences.
Xavier glared at the hacker, his disdain evident as he took in the man’s rumpled, unpolished appearance. “Thanks, Jonathan,” he said curtly, dismissing him without a second thought. Donovan shot Francesca a look, his own eyes narrowing slightly. “C’mon, babe. We’re late,” Xavier said sharply. Her eyes widened—she knew how much he hated being late. Donovan’s expression shifted, something flickering in his gaze, almost like recognition. Francesca forced a smile, not wanting to cause a scene. As they left the store, Xavier’s hand clamped down on her arm, his grip tight and unrelenting. A gasp escaped her as she instinctively jerked back, trying to pull away. Let go!” she demanded, her voice trembling with panic. Xavier’s eyes darkened, shifting from their usual pretty blue to something cold and unforgiving, like ice.
“Do you like him? Are you cheating on me?” Xavier roared, dragging Francesca into a shadowed alley. Before she could respond, he shoved her against the cold brick wall, his voice a relentless storm of accusations and fury. He yelled and screamed, his words cutting like knives. Every instinct in her body urged her to run, to fight, to cry out for help—but instead, she retreated into the silence of her mind. She tried to block out the horror, willing herself to disappear into the safety of her thoughts, far away from the cruel reality unfolding around her. It worked for a second. She didn’t register the first hit. “You’re pathetic,” he spat, his voice venomous. “You’re lucky to have me. Who else would ever want you?” Her tears fell freely now, and she clutched her stomach as if holding herself together, trying not to break completely.
Xavier's yelling abruptly stopped, his voice cut off mid-rant. Francesca opened her eyes, startled, to see a figure standing behind him. “It's Donovan, by the way," the figure said casually, just before landing a brutal punch. Xavier crumpled to the ground, blood streaming from his nose and mouth. Francesca stood frozen, unable to look away as Donovan dropped down and continued the assault, each blow landing with force and fury.
~
The hospital room is heavy with silence as they sit together. The doctors are still running their tests, likely already contacting the police about what happened. They refuse to discharge her, insisting a mental health professional will be arriving soon. Francesca lies curled up on the examination table, her body tense and small. Beside her, Donovan sits with an air of quiet resolve, his presence grounding in the silence. His hand is wrapped around hers, his fingers warm against the cold, as though he could offer some measure of comfort, though nothing could fill the empty space inside her. “You need to call your family. They should know what happened,” he whispers. “I can’t.” Her words are flat, devoid of emotion, yet resolute in their finality. The thought of reaching out to anyone feels unbearable, a weight she isn’t ready to carry. She just wants to forget. She wants it to vanish from her mind. “You need to talk to someone,” Donovan presses, his voice steady but soft. “Keeping this inside will only make it worse.” Francesca remains silent, her eyes focused on nothing in particular, the pull of his words sinking in. She knows he’s right, but the thought of reliving it, of opening herself to someone else’s gaze, feels like a betrayal to the quiet, fragile shell she’s clinging to. She can’t let this break her. She won’t let it undo the strength she’s fought so hard to build. “Why’d you help me?” Francesca asks after a long pause, her gaze shifting to his. He had no reason to. Their relationship was friendly but they barely knew each other besides the occasional run in. For a moment, Donovan says nothing. “Because I know what it’s like,” he replies quietly, his voice soft but laden with an understanding she can’t quite grasp. No more words are spoken. The room returns to its hushed state, but something shifts in the space between them. Francesca doesn’t release his hand. Instead, she tightens her grip, not out of desperation, but as a silent promise. She doesn’t let go.
~
The pink plus sign on the test was all it took to unravel her. Tears blurred her vision as she stared at the small plastic strip, its stark symbol a cruel reminder of the past she had tried so hard to escape. Months had passed since it happened, but it felt like no time at all. Francesca had changed everything—her phone number, her apartment—anything she could think of to keep him from finding her. The security at work had been instructed to call the police immediately if he showed up. She had started therapy, taking slow, careful steps toward healing. And yet, this. Why now? She had been so careful.
There was a soft knock on the door, followed by it creaking open. It was Donovan—the only person who knew, the one she trusted to keep the dark parts of her past safe. Wordlessly, she handed him the test, unable to speak the words that had been choking her since she saw the result. Her body looked no different. She hadn’t gained weight, nor did she feel the usual signs of pregnancy—no morning sickness, no changes she could pinpoint. It felt like a cruel trick. She hadn’t been with anyone since that night, and so it left only one possibility: Xavier.
“What do you want to do?” Donovan asked quietly, his voice full of the care that had always been there, no matter how many walls she built around herself. “It’s not exactly legal, but I know someone who might be able to help.”
The words hit her like a wave, but she didn’t have the luxury of time. She was already past the legal limit for a simple procedure. A doctor’s approval would be needed, and with it came the risk of a paper trail—a record that could lead back to Xavier. He would find out, and that would be the last thing she could allow. Xavier would do anything to regain control over her, even if it meant dragging her through a nightmare of courtrooms, forcing his way back into her life, tying her to him forever. She looked down at her stomach, her mind spinning. No hatred. No anger. Just an overwhelming disappointment in herself. She wasn’t ready for this, not for the tiny life growing inside her. She could barely keep herself together, let alone raise a child. Her own upbringing had been a disaster. She was hardly a model for motherhood.
“No,” she said quietly, her voice shaking. “I don’t want to do that.” It wasn’t fair to the life that was starting to take shape inside her, but the fear of what would happen to that child—foster care, strangers, uncertainty—clung to her like a dark cloud. Her work with the nonprofit had shown her all too clearly how fragile the system was. The thought of her child falling into it was enough to break her.
She looked at Donovan. He was gentle and kind, a man who had lost so much through no fault of his own, yet still found the strength to help others. A man who knew what it was like to lose everything—everything—because of love, and yet he was here, caring for her, asking nothing in return. He was a good man.
A thought struck her, sudden and surprising, but it felt like the only possible solution.
“What if you took it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The idea felt crazy, but there was something about it that clicked, like a puzzle piece falling into place. Donovan looked at her, confusion flickering in his eyes, and for a moment, she almost doubted herself. But then the idea made sense. Donovan had always expressed a longing for a family, but his body had been damaged in ways that made that impossible. But maybe, just maybe, they could make it work. It was a crazy thought, but in her heart, she knew it was the best option she had. Maybe this was how she could right a wrong, fix a family sin—by giving Donovan the one thing he could never have for himself.

The Syndicate was Switzerland, Devran thought as he entered their headquarters. They claimed neutrality but there with the death of one of their members, perhaps their worldview has changed. He’d scheduled an appointment online to check out their latest laptop, adding a note to give their leader a heads-up. Devran suspected Donovan would appreciate the gesture. Donovan was a curious figure—good-natured yet inscrutable, more politician than hacker. A worker guided him to a high stool tucked away in a more isolated corner of the space. It stood apart from the other stations, but Devran figured it was just a matter of what made the Syndicate’s leader feel comfortable. As the blonde man approached, Devran smiled and greeted him warmly. "Good morning," he said, his voice steady and confident. "Care to share your stance on things? I’m looking for something strong to back me up on upcoming projects. Feels like you’re the best person to talk to."

"Bad memory...understood." Giada simply nodded. And in that moment, she had understood two very important truths at the exact same time. The first was that she could relate. She had a couple of those bad memories herself, ones she never wanted to repeat or relive —the oldest coming back to her now. She could remember the exact moment life as she knew as a seventeen year old turned upside down clear as day.
It was the day her father walked into her bedroom, sat down on the edge of her bed and told her she was being shipped to Italy to be straightened out. Oh, the drama that ensued afterwards. How she protested, threatened to run off with James and that he'd never see her again if he did this to her. And he laughed. Her father actually laughed at that. The low, guttural sound still rang in her ears from time to time. It was the moment right before he revealed that her beloved had been unfaithful to her; Giada was packed the next day.
And the second truth she had learned: Donavon Walsh was hiding something, and now Giada was absolutely sure of it.
"I'm not surprised. You two seem to be very similar." She mused, a slow grin unfurling against her cheekbones. "Oh, please. Don't be sorry. It was ages ago, and I'm not quite so sure he was even one of the good ones after all. One of my father's men caught him cheating on me." Giada shook her head at the naive little girl she once was. Ready to risk it all for a chance on some puppy love. "And the crazy thing is: I wasn't sure what I was more upset about, the fact that my father had us tailed the whole time, and I was too naive to realize it or the infidelity. Either way, I still remember our time together fondly."
Her shoulders fell into a gentle shrug, the chianti at her lips as she took another small sip. "And I'm certainly holding you to it." Giada was mostly teasing, a rueful smile at her lips— coy and coquettish as she narrowed her chestnut irises. "You wouldn't lie to me right, Mr. Walsh." Giada paused, direct emphasis on addressing him. Everyone knew the weight of a D'Amiano threat promise. "If that is even your real name..."
Tumblr media
"Bad memory. Not worth repeating." Donovan’s words hung in the air, a flimsy attempt to push away the weight of the past, especially when it came to the Serpents. Anything connected to them wasn’t worth revisiting—not even for a second. And yet, here he was, talking to one of them like it was nothing. Like they hadn’t tried to kill him years ago. As if that history didn’t exist between them. But for some reason, he couldn’t seem to escape the D’Amiano sisters—or maybe, they couldn’t escape him. Giada had no idea just how close she was to the truth. Donovan wasn’t just Donovan—he was James, too. The same guy she remembered, the same guy she thought was long gone. He clenched his jaw, trying to keep the smile on his face as natural as possible, but his stomach tightened with every word. The stakes were getting higher, and this game of pretending was getting harder. He couldn’t let her figure it out. Not now. He couldn’t let her see through him, not when he was still barely keeping it together as Donovan. But there was something about her. Something in the way she looked at him that made his chest tighten in a way he didn’t know how to handle. It was that feeling—the one that came with the first love, the one that never really left. Even when you tried to bury it. Even when you tried to be someone else. "Captain America, huh?" Donovan laughed, but the sound was a little too sharp, a little too forced. He raised his glass to his lips, pretending the movement was casual, hiding the slight tremor in his hand. "Sounds like he had this way of making everything sound more heroic than it actually was," he said, his voice steady despite the growing tension in his chest. "Guess I’ve picked up a little of that myself." He met her gaze for a split second, but it was too much. The intensity of her stare pulled him in, and for a moment, he felt exposed, as if she could see right through him. He looked away quickly, trying to regain some semblance of control. "Sorry it didn’t work out between you two," he added, his voice quieter now, like he was afraid to speak too loudly, afraid to make this whole thing too real. "He sounds like a good guy. I think." Good guy, huh? He didn’t need to say it, but it felt like the words were falling from his mouth regardless. And in that moment, it felt like the biggest lie he’d ever told. James was him. But he couldn’t tell her that. He couldn’t admit the truth, not when it was so tangled in all the things that had gone wrong. He leaned back a little, breathing out a sigh he hadn’t even realized he was holding. "Your secret’s safe with me," he said, his voice low, a little more intense than he meant it to be. He quickly cleared his throat. "I don’t plan on letting anyone know how soft I am, either." He smiled, trying to play it off as a joke, but the words felt empty as soon as they left his mouth. He took another drink, hoping it would steady his nerves, but he could feel the heat of the moment surging beneath his skin. He wasn’t fooling her—not really. Giada saw more than he wanted her to. And that was both terrifying and... exhilarating. The fact that she could see through the layers he’d built up, the fact that she could see him, made him feel both exposed and wanted in ways he wasn’t ready to confront.

Hannah had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to plants. She honestly had thought her and Zion would simply have a house full of greenery as their children but she had been unable to convince her husband otherwise. Though he had been able convince her otherwise. Not that she didn't think they'd still have plants but she had recently brought up to him that she wanted children, too. Hannah had just finished tending to one of the plots when she spotted another member, "How's your plot looking?" Hannah approached, wiping her dirt covered hands on her apron.

The Enforcer (Murder, Inc., 1951)
"In seven more hours, Mendoza walks out of that courtroom a free man. How can that be? What's wrong with the law that we can't touch him? Oh, I know, our kind of laws are designed to protect the innocent. It's not enough that we know a man is guilty, we have to prove it."
#the enforcer#murder‚ inc.#1951#film noir#american cinema#bretaigne windust#martin rackin#raoul walsh#humphrey bogart#ted de corsia#zero mostel#everett sloane#roy roberts#michael tolan#king donovan#bob steele#don beddoe#adelaide klein#jack lambert#john kellogg#compellingly told police procedural noir. the real draw here is the effective and fairly original shape of the narrative: we open with#Bogart looking after his key witness‚ his case against a major gangland figure all but sown up. when said witness falls to his death#(undoubtedly inspired by the real world death of Abe Reles‚ a hitman for the irl Murder Inc who fell to his death whilst in police custody#having turned informant) Bogie has to go back over the case to date‚ cueing up a series of flashbacks in reverse order. it's a neat conceit#and allows for characters we've already met (and indeed already seen die) to be reintroduced in a way that shows them in a very different#light. a strong cast too; Bogie is Bogie‚ unchallenged by this part but effortlessly charismatic‚ with some great supports (shout out to#the perennially brilliant Mostel‚ a very fine dramatic actor who's often remembered only for his comedy). the idea that these cops have no#understanding whatsoever of terms like 'a hit' or 'a contract' somewhat stretches the suspension of disbelief but then after all there must#have been a time when those phrases were unfamiliar (this could always be a period piece i suppose; it isn't at all clear but the real#Murder Inc were exposed and disbanded in the early 40s so maybe this is meant to be then (tho some big changes made to the real story)

closed thread @moody-money // plaza lobby
Francesca stood, captivated by the shimmering beauty of the Plaza. It always looked breathtaking at Christmas, but tonight it felt even more magical, thanks to her sister’s event. She caught a glimpse of herself in a nearby reflection—her dress was daring, just the right mix of bold and elegant. She felt beautiful, empowered by the choice. Her date looked incredible too, and she couldn’t wait to spend more time with him. Yet, despite the sparkle of the evening, a knot twisted in her stomach, not just because of the threats she’d received. It had been days since she ran off crying after her argument with Donovan at the arcade. She hadn’t spoken to him since, and the idea of seeing him tonight felt overwhelming. It wasn’t the right time—not yet. But avoiding him forever wasn’t realistic. After all, they were about to become family. With a heavy sigh, she gazed up at the towering Christmas tree, silently wishing for things she knew were out of her reach. And then, she felt it—eyes on her. Slowly, she turned, her heart sinking when she saw the last person she wanted to face. She tried to summon a smile, but it felt brittle, hollow, a thin mask over the turmoil inside. All she really wanted was to burst into tears, but she wouldn’t—her mascara was too expensive for that.

Words couldn’t capture the seething rage that burned through Devran. This wasn’t some random act—it was a calculated assault, one that required careful planning. His ally had betrayed him, and now, with Reyan injured—the one person who had always kept him grounded—Devran felt no need for restraint. He wasn’t here to play nice. He knew exactly where Donovan spent his time, and that’s why he arrived early at the arcade, slipping in without a hitch before the doors even opened. It's easy enough to find Donovan in the backroom. "Hello," Devran says, his tone dripping with false cheer. He delivers a punch to Donovan's face, sending him tumbling from his chair. Devran yanks him off the floor, jerking Donovan up by his t-shirt collar. A gun at the older man's temple appears before he has a chance to realize. "I don't like being made a fool of Donovan. Just give me a reason." He hisses, pushing the steel harder against his skull.

Falling apart was a luxury Giada D'Amiano couldn't afford, no matter how deeply lined each and every one of her designer handbags were. Every crack, falter, tear  —especially in the wake of tragedy and chaos— came at an expensive price. It was weakness.  And the one time she had let her façade splinter, it had cost her tremendously and sent her packing to another country.  But Giada had learned since then, the picture of poise now, and at his words, Giada nodded, chestnut tendrils gently framing her face as she did so. "I appreciate your trust. I only fear we are one text message away from an all out gang war, and the only way to prevent it is to neutralize the real threat, this imposter or whatever else it may lead it to." Giada held his gaze, leaning forward. "Which is where I believe the Syndicate's expertise with technology is vital. I'd be remiss to think anything else." Bringing a manicured finger to her burgundy pout she paused, choosing her next words carefully, deepening her gaze. " And with our finances, I do think we could be very valuable to one another, stronger together...The Serpents and the Syndicate."  Giada felt compelled to clarify.  "An alliance would most certainly be of interest to me." She just had to get council approval, but hopefully not for long.

Donovan followed Giada into her office, the shift to her professional demeanor instantly grounding him. He took in the regal decor, a stark contrast to the chaos in their lives, and felt a moment of admiration for her poise. If the Syndicate's former leader died and then started making threats, Donovan's office would be a disaster. “I appreciate you making time for this, Ms. D'Amiano,” he replied, his tone turning serious as she expressed her concerns. “I get it; these are tough circumstances. If you say this masked man isn’t Giovanni’s style, then I trust your instincts. It’s crucial to know who we’re really dealing with.” Donovan did not know too much about the former Don, but Giada would've been the closest to the man. He made a disappointed sound. It felt like the more he looked into this, the bigger the wall he ran into. Donovan leaned forward slightly, the weight of their situation settling in. “As for the Syndicate, we’re still gathering intel. It’s a complicated mess, but we’re not giving up. I have a feeling this imposter might lead us to something bigger. If you have any more insights or anything that could help us connect the dots, it would be invaluable.” Donovan paused, letting his words hang in the air. “We need to stay ahead of this threat together.” The words were sincere, even if the thought of working with a Serpent made his skin crawl. Donovan prided himself on being open-minded, but it was tough to shake off the resentment when a group had tried to take his life. He remembered Giada as someone good, but he couldn’t help wondering how much time had changed her. After all, he wasn’t the same kid she once knew either.
